Since I began sourcing unique, quality fabrics for Fine Fabrics, I learned that textile art is a cottage industry managed by women in many third world countries. For many, traditional textile art can be a source of self reliance and independence. We at Fine Fabrics are making a point of finding and promoting fabrics made by these women entrepreneurs. When we are reasonably sure that the proceeds from the purchase are indeed benefiting these women directly, we join in the promotion.

On the evening of October 4, in conjunction with the 1st Thursday Event sponsored by the Santa Barbara Downtown Organization, Fine Fabrics will host an exhibit of batik fabric. Each piece is unique, designed by Lady Jezima Mohamed, a Sri Lankan artist who for more than 50 years has practiced her art and sold her original pieces from her beachside studio that borders the jungles of South Sri Lanka.

Many of Lady Jezima’s original designs are inspired by the natural habitat of jungle flowers, grasses, bushes, trees, wild animals, birds, the ocean, the coastline and beaches, and aquatic life. She also draws upon local folklore, the seasons and interpretations of day and night in a harmonious rhythm. Her canvas is cotton and silk.

Lady Jezima employs more than 20 women from the local villages in her studio, the area around which was directly hit by the 2004 Tsunami. This along with the civil war raging in Northeastern Sri Lanka has devastated the resort industry that supported the batik enterprise.

To sustain the batik artists have teamed with an entrepreneurial 18 year old from the Sri Lankan Capital of Colombo, Rasika Lakmal. Rasika is exporting the batiks not only to help her family that was displaced by the war, but also to go to college and travel to Hong Kong for her wedding.

Help us in supporting their move into export so that Rasika may realize her dreams, and that Lady Jezima's batik enterprise will survive.
